Music has always played a major part in the life of the parish and its liturgy, and New Kilpatrick has been served by a number of fine organists. The longest tenure to date has been James Downie with forty years' devoted service, and between 1939 and 1976 Harry MacGill made an immense contribution to the kirk's musical life. He presented large-scale choral works, including Bach's Passions and the Requiems of Brahms and Mozart, and he founded the Bearsden Choir and New Kilpatrick Singers. The latter was disbanded in 2009 following the death of its conductor, Tryphena Nixon. Since 1993 the post of Director of Music has been held by Christopher Nickol. One of his primary objectives is to provide opportunities for kirk members and the wider community to make music for the glory of God, irrespective of age or experience. To this end he runs five groups - the Church Choir, the New Kilpatrick Chorus, the Last Sunday Choir, a Music Group and, when numbers permit a Junior Choir. Christopher was born in Cambridge, and his love of the liturgy and its music was nurtured at Ampleforth College whilst he was a schoolboy there. An organ scholarship to the college chapel of Royal Holloway College (University of London) steeped him in the Anglican repertoire, and a postgraduate scholarship to the Royal College of Music furthered his piano and organ studies. Outwith the kirk he has a diverse career as a teacher, recitalist, conductor and accompanist. He has performed with many of Scotland's major choirs and orchestras, and plays frequently at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery. He has given recitals throughout the UK and overseas, broadcast on BBC Radio and TV, and has recorded five CDs.
