CHAMPION’S CHALLENGE
Come on you champions join the winning side. Come on you champions cross the finish line. With Jesus our trainer and team-mate, He is alive and so let’s celebrate!
This was the most appropriate theme song for our Holiday Club ‘Champion’s Challenge’. As you can imagine, it had a sporting theme and was most fittingly sung during the first week of the Beijing Olympics.
At first, I thought the title should have been in the plural. Then I realised that the apostrophe s was significant. The Holiday Club was all about the challenge of one unique champion – and that was Jesus! He was described every day in a different way – The Trainer, the Physio, the Team-mate, the Substitute and, of course, the Winner. The different aspects of His ministry were neatly summarised in this sporting terminology.
Almost 70 children registered for the club and 35 adults and young people participated in the leadership team. Surprisingly, almost 75% of the children were boys and 25% girls. Perhaps that’s why the chant for the Roaring Rowers included:
We’re the Roaring Rowers And we make a lot of noise That’s because we’ve got lots of mischievous boys!
I make no comment! Suffice to say, the children who attended the club created a real buzz in the hall and made a wonderful contribution to its success. There was a lot of laughter, shouting, singing, praying, creativity, imagination and even silence! It was great!
Kip McGrath gave a generous cheque to cover the cost of the hospitality. And there was an anonymous donation of a box of fruity chewits accompanied by this note. ‘Hope everyone has a great time! This is a very small consolation gift for all those who can’t be medal winners! Good luck to everyone taking part!’ Much encouragement! Was it from you?
One of the leadership team sent me a word of thanks. She had been swithering about participating. Age and energy levels were considerations. ‘I am so glad I changed my mind.’ she wrote. ‘I really enjoyed myself!’
She certainly rose to the challenge. She forgot herself – age and energy levels – and followed the true champion of all who leads us in the most surprising ways into a new way of living and loving, caring and sharing. And we certainly found that to be true in our Champion’s Challenge.

Our Summer Fair was a great success! Many of our organisations set up stalls including morning coffees and snack lunches. Many of the local shops and businesses made generous donations. The purpose of the Fair was twofold - to have a good time and to raise funds for our Bicentennial Projects. Both were achieved in full measure! Photo: Paul Robertson There are two projects. The one is Tabeetha School in Jaffa, Israel. This is a unique educational environment where pupils who belong to the three great Abrahamic faiths are educated together. The other is a commissioned piece of artwork for the kirk on the theme 'Peace and Reconciliation'. This will be the fruit of an exciting piece of collaboration between New Kilpatrick and the Glasgow School of Art. There is a lot of concern for our world and a desire to find more creative ways of responding to the violence, hatred and misunderstanding which is so pervasive. This was a chance to make a modest contribution to the peace of the earth and to enrich the lives of young people in one of the most troubled areas of the world. So many thanks to everyone who participated. Almost £4500 was raised for our Bicentennial Projects.
